Next Event

The next meeting of the Devon International Trade Forum will take place from 6.00pm on Tuesday 26th February 2013. The meeting will be held at the Innovation Centre at Exeter University and generously sponsored by Francis Clark LLP.

As usual, the event is free of charge for exporting businesses to attend and will feature a programme of short talks on international trade related subjects from industry professionals and local exporting companies.

There is a slight change to the program, the buffet and refreshments will be a served before the event from 6.00 -7.00pm but the opportunity to network and informally share exporting experiences with other delegates is still available before and after the presentations.

To allow us to cater for expected numbers, please register your intention to come along by visiting the registration page. An acknowledgement of your registration will be sent to you by email. Further details, along with directions to the venue, will be sent approximately one week before the event.

During the event the following presentations will be given:

• Introduction by Tim Sheehan – DITF Chairman

• Global Economic Review and Forecast – Janaka Peiris,  Associate Director, Financial Markets Sales South & West – Lloyds TSB

• Case Study – Ed Lewis – Geocel Ltd

“Sealing Export Deals”

You may have seen or even used the sealant and adhesive products manufactured by Plympton based firm Geocel Ltd – they’re on the shelves of stores like B&Q, Screwfix, Travis Perkins and Plumbase around the country. But Geocel also successfully exports its products throughout Europe and is rapidly expanding into more challenging markets like South Africa, India and South East Asia.

• Export Events Diary

Steve Southcott of UK Trade & Investment, the government backed organisation that helps British companies to internationalise and succeed in overseas markets, will present a roundup of international trade related events taking place locally and throughout the South West region over the next few months.

• Regional Overview – UKIBC – Kevin McCole

“Emerging India.”

As one of the so-called ‘BRIC economies’, India’s recession-busting growth (currently still at over 5% per annum) should make it an obvious and important market for Devon based exporters of goods and services, including consumer products. This is because India’s growth is driven largely by the domestic demand of over 1.2 billion people, almost half of which are under 24 years of age. But just how easy is it to access this market? The UK India Business Council helps to provide the resource, knowledge and infrastructure support vital for many UK companies to make the most of emerging opportunities in India. Come along to hear Kevin McCole of UKIBC explain what is in demand, where it is required and to whom it could be of interest in India.

Please be sure to book your place if you plan on coming along - we very much look forward to seeing you on the evening!

“Tax issues arising from exporting/trading overseas.”

(By: Damian Lannon, Tax Partner, Exeter office and Julie Towers, VAT partner,

Trading overseas can be a minefield when thinking about tax. This session will highlight a few of the key areas to be aware of to avoid potential bear traps which can lead to unnecessary foreign tax liabilities.  It will also outline the VAT rules for dealing with customers both in and outside the EU including reporting requirements.
